CBD and Mental Health

Fear, Anxiety and Stress

If you've been feeling a little more stressed than usual you're not alone. Recently a study conducted by the American Psychological Association found that 78% of adults are experiencing stress, specifically surrounding the coronavirus (1). Fear, anxiety, and stress are common responses to changing circumstances. How we manage that stress plays a large role in our overall health and wellbeing. When these responses are excessive, it can lead to mental health issues. One of the ways we can help manage stress is through the use of cannabidiol (CBD).

CBD in the Clinical Setting

With the growing popularity of CBD and claims of it's benefits, clinical studies of the compound have gained traction. A review of primary preclinical, clinical, and epidemiological studies published in the Neurotherapeutics Journal found "evidence strongly supports CBD as a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder when administered acutely..." (2). As we know, CBD plays a role in modulating the endocannabinoid system. The anxiolytic action occurs in CBD's impact on the CB1, serotonin 5-HT1A , and transient receptor potential (TRP) vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) receptors (2). These receptors are a significant part of our emotional regulation. As CBD interacts with our bodies it aids in regulating our emotions. In doing so, studies show CBD helps reduce anxiety, fear, and compulsions (2).

Why CBD?

When it comes to improving our emotional and mental health there are many options. With treatments such as psychiatry or prescription medication, where does CBD fit in? While not a substitute for professional help, CBD offers a natural alternative to a wide range of people. Whether it is occasional stress, anxiety, or PTSD, clinical evidence and personal testimony show that CBD helps improve mental health. The advantage of this compound over others is the strong safety profile. Unlike other chemical compounds, increasing CBD dosage does not produce anxiety and has minimal sedative effects (2). This allows users to increase or decrease their dosage to figure out what works for their specific health goals.
